The history of the original estate of Vanajanlinna, Äikäälä, goes back to the Middle Ages. Historical records mention Olle af Aeykaelum (Olli of Äikäälä) as the owner of the Äikäälä estate in 1374. After him the farm has had many owners and a colourful history as a freehold and holding farm used for agriculture, but also valued for its beautiful surroundings in the Häme region. |

The history of Vanajanlinna begins in 1918, as the Äikäälä estate was acquired by the main shareholder of the Rosenlew Group, Doctor of Medicine and Chirurgery, Carl Wilhelm Rosenlew. The estate was sold to him by Mr. Stenij, a professor of theology. Rosenlew expanded the original estate by acquiring a parcel of the Kitu farm (in 1922) and later the Kappola farm (in 1927), so that the total area of the manor was over 500 hectares. This gave him elk-hunting privileges in the area. Rosenlew´s idea was to build a hunting lodge in this beautiful natural setting to which he could invite leading social and political figures. Rosenlew never planned to live in the house permanently. |
