The Sirola Institute was shut down in 1994. A social transition caused the end of the folk high school institution despite the fact that the institute had concentrated on information and communication theory after the collapse of the political education in the 1980´s.

In 1996 the buildings and land of Vanajanlinna were acquired by the City of Hämeenlinna. After the closure of the folk high school the Yrjö Sirola Foundation decided to transfer Vanajanlinna and its grounds to a real estate company to be founded. In this connection the City of Hämeenlinna had an option to buy the castle, and after negotiations, Vanajanlinna was acquired by the City of Hämeenlinna for the price of FIM10 millions. The deal included an agreement on the movable property according to which the movables were divided among the City of Hämeenlinna and Vanajanlinna Oy (limited), the leaser of the castle.

Since the closure of the folk high school the main leaser of the castle has been Vanajanlinna Oy, mostly owned by the Yrjö Sirola Foundation. As the City of Hämeenlinna acquired the estate, it also became a shareholder of the Vanajanlinna Oy with a share of 19%.
